SAVE THE HOWARD UNIVERSITY DANCE AREA OF CONCENTRATION FROM CLOSURE

Dear Dance Community Practitioners and Supporters,

As many of your may know, President Sidney Ribeau has recommended that the Howard University Dance Major program be closed. He is making this recommendation as a part of the President's Commission on Academic Renewal (PCAR) process that Howard University is currently undertaking. Details about the PCAR and the President's specific recommendations are printed below and also articulated in the attached document.

Also attached is a copy of the letter that I have submitted in response to the President's recommendation. We are extremely grateful to all of you who have forwarded your position statements in support of the Howard University Dance Major. For those who have not yet sent your letters, you can still send your statements, however you must act immediately!!!!

Your letter must include factual data. This may include:

  • how the Dance Program has played an intrical role in the development of your professional career (i.e. on the stage, founding of an arts organization, awards you may have received, etc.),
  • has impacted your career, personal development, and/or organization (through contact with our students, Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson (peace and blessings upon her), and/or esteemed dance faculty),
  • has provided opportunity for artistic connections both nationally and internationally,
  • is an integral extension of you the performer, writer, administrator, instructor, technician, historian, critic and/or therapist.
  • other; if you do not have a direct connection to the Dance Major Program at Howard University however, recognize the value and significance of the Dance Major being maintained and supported, please communicate what you consider the merits for maintaining the Dance Major program at Howard University in your own words.

Please be sure to place the letter on professional company letterhead and/or your own letterhead.
